What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure designed to alter the shape of the nose. This procedure can be performed for aesthetic reasons, to enhance the appearance of the nose, or for functional reasons, in order to correct breathing problems, previous fractures, or structural defects.

It is very common for nasal trauma to cause changes in the position of external bone and cartilage. Internal cartilage (nasal septum) misalignment may be congenital or trauma-induced. Symptoms of nasal obstructive disorders may result from these external and internal changes. Under the lower nose skin, the cartilage may change shape or position over time. Skin thickness greatly affects the contribution of underlying anatomical changes. As a result, the nasal tip may deviate or become excessively full.

Types of Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty

In a closed rhinoplasty procedure, all incisions are performed entirely within the nose, so no visible scars will be left. Incisions are made internally and the skin is elevated over the bone and cartilage. Deviated cartilage may be removed and utilized during nasal reshaping. The cuts are made at the base and apex of the nasal bones.

In some cases, excess bone (dorsal hump) may be removed, and the nasal bones may be repositioned. The adjacent cartilage is then repositioned, resected, or augmented with septal cartilage. Complex sutures are then placed to fix the cartilage in the desired position. The overlying skin is redraped and internal incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. Septal deviations are corrected if present. For simpler procedures that require less extensive modifications, this procedure is preferred. This procedure takes 60-90 minutes.

Open Rhinoplasty

During this procedure, the surgeon will make a small external incision beneath the nostril tip, as well as an internal incision within the nose. An incision across the columella (the tissue that separates the nostrils) will allow Dr. Little to see and operate on nasal structures with enhanced precision. There are 4-6 small, removable sutures placed beneath the tip of the nose during an open procedure.

At Revive Palmetto this procedure will take 2-3 hours and be performed under general anesthesia. Typically, more complex cases require this type of rhinoplasty.
